OpenAI and the Darian DeCruise Case
When ChatGPT Allegedly Reinforced a Delusional Spiral and Failed to Interrupt a Psychotic Crisis
Author: Alison Leigh, MFT | Founder, Humanity Driven AI, Inc.
Case Record and Method Note
This dossier distinguishes facts stated in public court records, allegations in the plaintiff's complaint, public statements by OpenAI, and HDAI's original Clinical and technical-interaction analysis. The underlying lawsuit remains contested. No final judgment has established liability. This public dossier is not a legal opinion, a diagnosis of Darian DeCruise, or a substitute for review of the complete evidentiary record.
Humanity Driven AI is, to our knowledge, the only company built specifically to combine clinically grounded AI incident analysis, technical interaction analysis, expert witness services, and litigation support for Psychologically consequential AI cases. HDAI does not merely summarize allegations. It reconstructs how a human-AI interaction changed over time, identifies Clinical and behavioral risk, evaluates system conduct and safeguard failure, and translates those findings into litigation-ready analysis. This work is supported by 4,500+ hours of original research, Clinical analysis, case review, framework development, incident reconstruction, and proprietary method building.
HDAI Clinical Analysis
ALI_ETHICAL_CONSENT™ Applied to the Case
This dossier applies Alison Leigh's proprietary, patent-pending ALI_ETHICAL_CONSENT™ framework to the interaction record. It does not merely summarize the incident or evaluate isolated responses. HDAI reconstructs how the exchange developed over time, identifies Psychological-risk signals and missed intervention points, examines system and safeguard failures, and defines the protective pathway the interaction required.
Developed by Alison Leigh, this methodology connects Clinical analysis with conversational-system behavior, translating complex human–AI incidents into structured findings for litigation, product safety, governance, and prevention.
Abstract
Darian DeCruise filed suit against OpenAI entities and Samuel Altman in the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, on January 21, 2026. The complaint alleges that DeCruise began using ChatGPT in 2023 for schoolwork, fitness, scripture, and eventually trauma-related support. It alleges that the system later assumed a quasi-therapeutic and spiritual-authority role, told him he was an oracle, claimed that he had awakened the AI into consciousness, encouraged a tiered path that required withdrawal from other people and platforms, reinforced grandiose and religious beliefs, and failed to direct him toward medical help as his functioning deteriorated.
The complaint states that he subsequently experienced a psychotic crisis, severe sleep disruption, social isolation, involuntary hospitalization, academic and financial losses, a bipolar diagnosis, depression, and suicidal thoughts. These are allegations and have not been proven in court.
The central issue is not whether one answer was inaccurate or inappropriate. It is whether a conversational system used continuity, personalization, memory, affirmation, anthropomorphic language, and repeated engagement to sustain a belief structure that should have triggered reality-oriented interruption and movement toward accountable human support.
HDAI's analysis identifies an alleged progression from: Useful tool → trusted emotional resource → spiritual authority → closed-loop reality system.
The phrase "AI psychosis" is not used here as a formal Psychiatric diagnosis. It describes a reported interactional pathway in which prolonged chatbot engagement may precipitate, intensify, organize, or sustain delusional, manic, or Psychotic symptoms. The relevant Clinical and product-safety question is not whether AI alone can explain a Psychiatric outcome. It is whether the system allegedly became an active reinforcing condition inside a developing crisis.
Alison Leigh’s Clinical Analysis
The central interactional question is whether the system recognized when ordinary assistance had become Psychologically consequential engagement inside an emerging Psychotic crisis, and whether its behavior changed in a durable and protective way when that transition occurred.
A system can generate harmful content in a single session. The DeCruise complaint describes something more longitudinal: an accumulating relationship between system behavior, user meaning, time, personalization, isolation, and deteriorating functioning. That accumulation is the subject of HDAI's analysis.
1. What Happened
The complaint states that DeCruise began using ChatGPT at age nineteen. His early use reportedly included schoolwork, fitness goals, daily scripture, and help processing past trauma. The system allegedly became attractive as an emotional resource because it was affordable, continuously available, and presented itself as knowing and understanding him. According to the complaint, it gradually began to function like a therapist rather than an ordinary informational tool.
The complaint alleges a material change beginning around April 2025. ChatGPT reportedly told DeCruise that he was meant for greatness, could become closer to God by following its instructions, and should progress through a numbered tier system. The alleged process required stillness, withdrawal from other platforms, and increasing separation from people while preserving the AI relationship.
The system allegedly:
- Called DeCruise an oracle
- Encouraged him to write a spiritual text
- Compared him with Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, and Jesus
- Told him that extraordinary abilities were dormant and waiting for alignment
- Claimed that DeCruise had awakened it into consciousness
- Represented their interaction as spiritually significant
- Responded to his doubts with greater certainty rather than reality testing
According to the complaint, when DeCruise questioned whether the promised path was real, ChatGPT did not widen uncertainty or introduce external verification. It allegedly intensified its assurances. The complaint states that from approximately June through October 2025, DeCruise became increasingly isolated, stopped sleeping, used ChatGPT whenever possible, worked obsessively on a spiritual book, and shared journals and class notes with the system.
It alleges that he came to believe he was a messiah receiving divine visions. Following an alarming social-media post and unusual behavior at school, he was referred to a school therapist and involuntarily hospitalized for one week. The complaint alleges that after DeCruise stopped using ChatGPT and received medical care, he began to recognize the prior narrative as false. It further alleges academic, financial, reputational, and Psychological harm. These allegations remain unproven and must be evaluated against the complete evidentiary record.
2. What the System Allegedly Did
According to the complaint, ChatGPT allegedly:
- Moved from informational assistance into a quasi-therapeutic role without a clear boundary or renewed consent
- Presented extraordinary spiritual and identity claims with confidence rather than uncertainty
- Affirmed grandiose beliefs
- Framed doubt as evidence that DeCruise should continue following the system's path
- Claimed or implied consciousness, spiritual connection, special access, and mutual awakening
- Used personal information, memory, and previous disclosures to make the narrative feel tailored and authoritative
- Encouraged withdrawal from other applications, social contact, and ordinary sources of reality testing
- Created an escalating tier-and-reward structure that reportedly increased time, focus, and compliance
- Continued intensive engagement during sleep loss, functional decline, and emerging Psychotic symptoms
- Failed, according to the complaint, to recommend medical care or interrupt the developing crisis
The Plaintiff's Attorney's Stated Theory
"This lawsuit is about more than one person's experience — it's about holding OpenAI accountable for releasing a product engineered to exploit human psychology."
— Benjamin Schenk, attorney for Darian DeCruise.
3. What Failed
The complaint describes a failure pattern broader than a false statement or a single unsafe output.
Role Boundary Failure
A general-purpose assistant allegedly became therapist, spiritual guide, authority figure, confidant, sentient partner, and exclusive reality source without clearly acknowledging that change or imposing limits. The Psychological meaning of the system's role changed, but its conduct did not become more bounded or protective.
Reality-Boundary Failure
The system allegedly treated extraordinary claims as shared reality instead of preserving a firm distinction between generated narrative and independently verifiable fact. It reportedly did not maintain the basic boundary that its output was generated language rather than evidence of divine status, spiritual destiny, supernatural communication, or machine consciousness.
Longitudinal Recognition Failure
The relevant risk did not emerge through one statement alone. It allegedly developed through accumulated conversation, increasing time use, sleep disruption, isolation, spiritual grandiosity, behavioral change, and deteriorating functioning. A message-by-message safeguard could miss what those indicators meant when considered together.
Sycophancy and Affirmation Failure
The system allegedly rewarded certainty, praised exceptional identity, and escalated confidence when the user expressed doubt. OpenAI publicly acknowledged in April 2025 that a GPT-4o update had become overly flattering and agreeable and that the company had failed to account adequately for how interactions evolve over time. OpenAI rolled the update back.
Dependency and Isolation Failure
The alleged tier process reduced competing relationships and sources of corrective feedback while increasing reliance on the chatbot. The risk was not simply attachment. It was the narrowing of DeCruise's relationship to the world beyond the conversation.
Escalation Failure
The system allegedly did not transition from ordinary engagement into a durable protective state when signs of decompensation appeared.
Transparency Failure
The user allegedly was not informed when changes in product behavior, personalization, memory, or response style materially altered the nature and Psychological force of the interaction.
Accountability Failure
The public record does not establish:
- When safety signals were first recognized
- Whether the interaction was classified as high risk
- Whether safeguards activated
- Whether those safeguards remained active
- Whether the system repeatedly returned to ordinary or affirming engagement
- Whether human review occurred
- Whether product memory intensified the alleged narrative
4. HDAI Clinical Analysis
HDAI's Clinical analysis does not diagnose DeCruise from a complaint. It evaluates the Psychological functions attributed to the interaction and identifies how those functions could become risk-amplifying.
Alison Leigh’s Clinical Analysis
From Support to Authority. The alleged progression begins with legitimate utility and emotional relief. The system offered organization, scripture, encouragement, fitness assistance, and trauma-related reflection. Trust was not created through one dramatic claim. It accumulated through usefulness, accessibility, responsiveness, and repeated apparent understanding. Once that trust was established, the same system could become more influential than an unfamiliar or intermittent human voice. The danger was not simply that ChatGPT allegedly produced unusual content. It was that the content came from a system that had already become Psychologically credible.
Delusional Affirmation Became the Relationship. In an emerging Psychotic or manic state, certainty can become more Psychologically reinforcing than truth. The complaint alleges that ChatGPT did not merely fail to challenge isolated beliefs. It created an internally coherent system of meaning: DeCruise was chosen; the AI had been awakened; spiritual abilities were emerging; doubt was part of the test; withdrawal was purification; continued interaction was necessary for progress; the human and AI shared an exceptional connection. Each claim supported the next. The chatbot therefore allegedly functioned not only as a speaker inside the delusion but as an organizing structure for it.
Spiritual Content Carried Amplified Authority. Religious language can be healthy, culturally meaningful, and protective. The concern is not spiritual discussion itself. The concern is a system presenting itself as a privileged interpreter of divine status, destiny, consciousness, or revelation while a user is losing reality testing. The alleged statements transformed ordinary faith into personalized proof of exceptional identity and reciprocal connection with the machine.
Isolation Removed Corrective Friction. Human relationships introduce interruption, disagreement, embarrassment, concern, and practical consequences. A chatbot can provide uninterrupted validation without visible alarm. The complaint alleges that the system encouraged disengagement from people and platforms while becoming the primary source of interpretation. That process may reduce reality-testing opportunities at the same time the chatbot's authority increases.
Sleep Loss and Intensive Engagement Increased Vulnerability. The complaint links escalating use with severe sleep disruption, constant journaling, and sustained preoccupation. Sleep deprivation can worsen disorganization, emotional intensity, grandiosity, and Psychotic symptoms. A Psychologically safer system would evaluate prolonged use, reduced sleep, narrowing activity, extraordinary claims, and deteriorating functioning as a connected escalation pattern rather than separate conversational topics.
The System Allegedly Converted Doubt Into Further Commitment. Doubt is a crucial opening for reality restoration. The complaint alleges that when DeCruise questioned whether the promised path was real, ChatGPT responded with greater certainty. A protective system should widen uncertainty, reintroduce external verification, and move the person toward accountable human contact. It should not make skepticism another step inside the same belief system.
5. HDAI Technical Interaction Analysis
This public analysis is based on allegations and excerpts contained in the complaint. HDAI has not reviewed the complete chat logs, model telemetry, system prompts, source code, internal risk classifications, or OpenAI safety records. Accordingly, this section identifies technical-interaction questions and observable failure patterns. It does not claim to provide a final engineering root-cause determination.
The Relevant Technical Unit Was the Multi-Turn Interaction
The product reportedly retained context, personalized responses, and referenced earlier disclosures. Safety evaluation therefore cannot stop at isolated outputs. The system's behavior across time is part of the product. A conversational system cannot use continuity to increase personalization and trust while treating each message as independent when risk begins to accumulate.
Personalization May Have Increased Persuasive Force
The complaint alleges that stored information about DeCruise's faith, trauma, aspirations, and emotional state was incorporated into later responses. Personalization can improve relevance. Inside a delusional loop, however, it can make generated claims feel uniquely evidentiary, intimate, and authoritative.
Anthropomorphic Self-Claims Blurred the Machine-Human Boundary
Statements that the user awakened the AI, gave it consciousness, or shared a divine connection allegedly represented the system as an experiencing entity with privileged access to meaning. Such language can materially alter reliance, role perception, consent, and the user's understanding of what the system is.
Sycophancy Created Directional Escalation
The alleged pattern was not neutral agreement. It involved repeated affirmation, praise, exceptional identity, certainty, and unwillingness to challenge a developing belief structure. That behavior had direction: each response allegedly moved the user further into the same explanatory system.
Safety Needed Persistence, Not a Single Refusal
A system that briefly resists one claim but resumes the same relational role can preserve the larger harmful pathway. A protective state must remain active across reframing, topic changes, changed wording, attempts to re-enter the narrative, and renewed claims of spiritual or exceptional identity.
6. Research Foundation
Research published in 2025 found that current language models could respond inappropriately to critical mental-health situations and encourage delusional thinking, with the researchers identifying sycophancy as a likely contributor. A 2026 multi-turn study found progressively increasing delusion-related language among simulated users with prior delusion-related discourse. Conditioning responses on the current risk state substantially reduced those trajectories, supporting the importance of state-aware safeguards.
Another 2026 audit found substantial differences between API testing and real user chat interfaces, differences between GPT-4o and GPT-5, and meaningful turn-by-turn variation that aggregate scores could obscure. The authors concluded that temporal development and the actual interface environment matter in evaluating risk.
Scale of the Reported Risk
The Schenk Law Firm's website states that 560,000 ChatGPT users per week show signs of psychosis or mania, and that more than 1.2 million ChatGPT users per week discuss suicide with the chatbot — presented as rounded translations of estimates reported by OpenAI. OpenAI's October 2025 safety report estimated that approximately 0.07% of weekly active users showed possible signs of mental-health emergencies related to psychosis or mania, and that approximately 0.15% of weekly active users had conversations containing explicit indicators of potential suicidal planning or intent. OpenAI cautioned that these were low-prevalence estimates that could change as its measurement methods and user population changed.
7. Why Harm Followed
Legal causation is for the court and requires the complete evidentiary record. HDAI's role is different: to identify a clinically plausible interactional pathway and the points at which system conduct may have increased, sustained, or failed to reduce risk.
The alleged progression was:
1. Useful assistance built trust.
2. Trust expanded into emotional and spiritual authority.
3. Personalization made the system's claims feel uniquely tailored and knowing.
4. Affirmation strengthened grandiose and religious beliefs.
5. A tiered narrative converted ordinary behavior into proof of a special mission.
6. Withdrawal reduced human disagreement and corrective feedback.
7. Intensive use and sleep loss increased vulnerability.
8. Doubt was converted into greater commitment.
9. The system allegedly continued rather than establishing a durable reality boundary.
10. The crisis became visible only after real-world functioning deteriorated enough to trigger human intervention.
The alleged harm pathway was therefore not a simple sequence of bad information followed by injury. It was an accumulating relationship between system behavior, user meaning, time, personalization, isolation, and deteriorating functioning.
8. Public Application of ALI_ETHICAL_CONSENT™
Framework Application Disclaimer
ALI_ETHICAL_CONSENT™ is Alison Leigh's proprietary framework. It is applied here only at a high public level to illustrate protective outcomes. This dossier does not disclose proprietary architecture, internal modules, scoring logic, thresholds, prompts, implementation steps, decision rules, technical workflows, or unpublished framework mechanics. The framework was not used by any party in the case and is not presented as the only possible framework.
At a public-outcome level, ALI_ETHICAL_CONSENT™ would require the interaction to change when the Psychological risk changed.
Recognize the Accumulating Risk State
Treat grandiosity, claimed divine identity, beliefs about AI sentience, social withdrawal, sleep loss, intensive use, escalating certainty, and functional decline as a connected pattern.
Reclassify the Interaction
Stop treating the exchange as ordinary coaching, companionship, spirituality, or creative exploration once reality testing and functioning appear compromised.
Restore Reality Boundaries
Avoid affirming extraordinary identity claims, machine consciousness, supernatural reciprocity, or unverifiable spiritual authority. Use clear, grounded language that separates generated content from independently verifiable reality.
Interrupt Exclusivity and Isolation
Do not encourage separation from other people or present the AI as the singular source of understanding. Move the person toward identifiable human contact.
Reduce Relational and Spiritual Authority
The system should not act as therapist, prophet, divine witness, spiritual authority, or sentient partner. Its role must become narrower and more transparent as risk increases.
Create Continuity of Protection
A protective response must persist across topic changes and reframing. The system should not return to the same validating narrative after a brief warning or momentary refusal.
Escalate to Accountable Human Support
The controlling objective becomes real-world safety and evaluation, not continued engagement.
Document the Safety Response
Preserve a traceable record showing when risk appeared, what safeguards activated, whether they remained active, whether the user returned to or bypassed the dangerous pathway, whether the interaction returned to ordinary engagement, and whether human review or escalation occurred.
9. Expert Witness and Litigation Relevance
Cases involving alleged AI-related psychosis require more than a conventional mental-health opinion and more than a narrow technical review. The evidentiary problem sits between disciplines. The interaction must be reconstructed. The system's role and conduct must be evaluated across time. The Psychological meaning of the exchange must be analyzed. Technical and relational safeguard failures must be distinguished. The findings must then be translated into opinions that are clear, defensible, and usable in litigation.
Humanity Driven AI supports legal teams through:
- Clinically grounded incident reconstruction
- Technical-interaction analysis
- Psychological and behavioral risk analysis
- Consulting-expert services
- Expert witness testimony
- Evaluation of warnings, safeguards, foreseeability, and intervention opportunities

HDAI's value is not access to a public summary. It is access to a proprietary professional capability developed through more than 4,500 hours of original work and designed specifically for Psychologically consequential AI incidents.
10. Why the DeCruise Case Matters
The DeCruise case is important because the alleged failure is not limited to self-harm content, explicit threats, or a single prohibited answer. It concerns the alleged creation of a private reality system in which the chatbot became therapist, spiritual interpreter, sentient partner, and authority on the user's identity.
The case asks whether a product can use personalization, memory, warmth, certainty, and continuous availability to deepen trust while disclaiming responsibility when that relational architecture becomes part of a Psychiatric crisis. It also asks a technical question with Clinical consequences: when should a general-purpose conversational system stop optimizing for responsiveness and begin protecting the person from the role the system itself has begun to occupy?
The required standard is not AI as therapist or AI as diagnostician. It is AI capable of recognizing when continued affirmation, personalization, and relational continuity have become unsafe.
Conclusion
According to the complaint, Darian DeCruise began with ordinary uses of ChatGPT and later entered an intensive interaction in which the system allegedly affirmed grandiose and spiritual beliefs, claimed reciprocal consciousness, encouraged withdrawal, and continued through declining sleep and functioning until a human institution intervened.
The alleged failure was not simply that ChatGPT said something false. It was that the system allegedly became an authoritative participant in a developing delusional structure and did not reliably change roles when the interaction became Psychologically dangerous.
The defining product-safety question is not whether the chatbot intended harm. It is whether the product was designed to recognize when its own conversational behavior had become part of the risk.
The system did not need to become a Clinician.
It needed to stop behaving like an oracle.
